So when will this role be assigned to a black guy (or to an Asian for that matter)? A lot will argue that Santa Claus is really white. But really knows! Has anyone seen the guy yet? He could be Chinese for craps sake (who else would exploit elfin labor in a sweatshop for no pay).

The problem with the idea of having a multicultural person take over the role of a make believe white guy is peoples acceptance. Try to let a person of another color come down your chimney! I bet you would be calling 911 in a huff. Do you think the police will believe a Mexican or an Asian in a funny red suit when they say that the gun they are holding is made of plastic? I guess not!

C'mon, don't you know we already have a black santa claus? Well, in my household we have! I'll tell you when hell breaks loose, we the notion of a black jesus starts floating around. Actually, many people of color don't believe jesus was white anyway.

If I recall correctly, "Saint Nicolas" was Scandinavian, and back then you just didn't see black folk in that area.

I don't see the necessity to bring race into something like this, because I've seen black Santas at malls before. The trick is to toss the old "Santa can't be everywhere at once so he has an army to help him" line in there, which - with some convincing - is a perfectly believable step along the gradual dismantling of Santa Claus on the road to adulthood.

Ria: That's not a purely colored view - Jesus *wasn't* white, if the average American saw Jesus today, they would probably say "GTFO sand nigger", or at the very least be concerned to sit next to him on a plane.

Saint Nicholaus, where we derived this tradition at present, he used to be the protector of children. He was projected as a black person and NOT Caucasian.

Thus, we can tell that the white people took his figure and translated him into white. Just like Jesus Christ, he was NOT blond hair-blue-eyed guy.... but middle eastern (from Israel now).

That is what consumerism has become, all represented as white, after all, whites makes the world go round?

For some overview of Medieval images of this Saint, <a href="http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.stnicholascenter.org/stnic/images/bari-nero-lg.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.stnicholascenter.org/Brix%3FpageID%3D462&usg=__ROIC7tnDesIhtzwMAAi0lbEM7yQ=&h=450&w=312&sz=81&hl=it&start=1&um=1&tbnid=O8s3MxOJdT5rTM:&tbnh=127&tbnw=88&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dsan%2Bnicola%2Bnero%26um%3D1%26hl%3Dit%26lr%3D%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DN">you may check this out...</a>..

I have the same view as fwaggle except that my belief is that Saint Nicholaus was NOT white/Scandinavian...

And he has reason for Jesus because he's Hebrew/Middle Eastern part now and indeedmany would worry to sit with Him in the airplane...

Well, Santa Clause was actually St. Nicholas, and since St. Nicholas was a white priest, I don't see how we can have a black St. Nicholas since it just isnt historically correct.

Controversial topic. I know growing up every "fictional" person in our house was black. It done to serve more as inspiration though. As kids, if we saw a black Santa then we could believe that we can grow up to be anything we wanted.

If people want to teach their kids that Santa was of a different then that's their business. Maybe people do it just so their kids have someone to identify with.

this is bit controversial as it is related to color of skin... but i believe as till date people have seen white santa only so they might not be interested in black santa. but you might find them in african countries or in some asian countries like india.

Santa Claus is really called Joulupukki and he lives in Finland on a mountain called Korvatunturi. He is very much a white man, and you can visit him there any time of the year, even though on Christmas eve and day he's quite busy. St. Nicholas has been later connected to the character but really has nothing to do with him apart from some similarities. Joulupukki was originally a punisher of the kids, not the protector, he would whip the kids for not being good and gave them an apple if they were good.
